About
As an emerging artist, Vanessa’s work is constantly evolving, moving forward and gaining clarity. Her developing style of painting seeks to integrate her more traditional techniques into a contemporary space, where a deeper understanding of herself and her observations comes into focus.
Many of Vanessa’s ideas emerge from information and observations gained through her interests in world affairs, nature and her involvement in grassroots environmental groups. She also finds people fascinating and enjoys using props in her portraiture, along with graphic backdrops featuring subtle colour gradients.
Expressing a deeper understanding in her work begins with an almost obsessive thought process, where ideas often come to her over several days. Morning thoughts often develop while she is in a semi-sleep state, as if her brain were on autopilot.
Vanessa enjoys working collaboratively and has recently teamed up with fellow artist and writer Audrey Egan on two major projects, which have been exhibited in Hobart and Sydney. Most recently, Vanessa has been selected as a finalist in the 2024 Greenway Art Prize and the Portia Geach Memorial.
Originally from Adelaide, Vanessa studied fine art at the North Adelaide School of Art, before going on to study graphic design. She now lives in Sydney and has a studio in Newtown. Vanessa is a member of Move Beyond Coal Sydney, assists creatively with various environmental groups, and is part of the Dirt Witch Collective and the Tree Veneration Society.
