02. Sacred Neem
Revered for its healing and protective qualities, the neem tree holds an important place in many communities across India. Its leaves, bark and seeds have been used in traditional medicine for generations, while spiritually it is closely associated with purification and the protection of both people and place.
Bright pieces of cloth and sacred thread hang from the tree as offerings, small, physical traces of prayers, promises and hopes. I was drawn to the way these human gestures become woven into the living tree, transforming it into both a place of devotion and a collective record of those who have visited.

03. Sue Higginson
This is a painting of the wonderful Sue Higginson, NSW Greens MLC. I was lucky enough to be at Glenbog State Forest for a citizen science weekend, spotting Greater Glider dens while Sue was there too, and saw an opportunity to paint one of my heroes. Sue had been invited by Wilderness Australia and the Bob Brown Foundation to inspect roadworks that had felled hundreds of trees along 2.5 km of roadside.
More than 150 Greater Glider dens have been found at Glenbog by citizen scientists, compared with just four recorded in the Forestry Corporation of NSW’s survey. Throughout that weekend, I could not believe how prolific the Greater Gliders were. Almost every hollow was home to a glider, possum or bird, while on the ground we saw dozens of wombat dens. This forest is high-density housing for the endangered Greater Glider, yet logging is pushing ahead, scheduled to begin on September the 1st 2026.
This painting pays homage to Sue and her tireless work to end cruel native forest logging in NSW. After seeing the painting, Sue explained that the blue of her jacket brought back memories of her first rainforest walk in the Dandenong Ranges as a child, when a pair of Crimson Rosellas flew overhead. A magical moment that shaped who she is today.
As a grassroots activist myself, I have a particular interest in endangered forests and the people fighting to protect them. I see my art as a form of advocacy and storytelling: capturing what is happening around me at this moment in history, and hopefully inspiring others to join a much-needed revolution for change.

05. Contemplation, Que South
This pastel work was my contribution to Bob Brown’s Art for takayna 2026. It sold at the exhibition in Hobart, raising funds for the Bob Brown Foundation. It felt really good to give something back to the people who fight so hard for Australia’s precious native forests and oceans. Thanks, Bob!

06. Vera Yee
I’ve wanted to paint Vera for many years, and while on residency at the Coal Loader, I knew this was our time. Vera lives next door to a friend of mine in Waverton, North Sydney. On the first day we met, the three of us went to a Stop Adani action, a monumental first for me!
For over 20 years, Vera has devoted herself to rehabilitating and preserving her local bushland, including Balls Head Reserve, through Bushcare North Sydney. You can often see her and her team weeding the wonderful Waverton wilderness! As well as her award-winning work with Bushcare, Vera is a passionate human rights and environmental activist and a keeper of native bees. She is never without a little bronze bee pinned to her chest.
After Vera sat for a couple of sketches in the studio, we went to a local park, where I photographed her in a huge Moreton Bay fig tree. Dressed in her work clothes and holding her gardening tools, she looked completely at home. I wanted to capture her lovely almond-shaped eyes, paying particular attention to her gentle confidence.
